Slumdog stars 'to get new homes'

>> Saturday, May 30, 2009

Rubina Ali stands in front of her demolished shanty in Mumbai Danny Boyle. Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail and Rubina Ali

The announcement by the state's top official creates the possibility that the homeless pair will own two flats. On Thursday, director Danny Boyle said a trust he had set up had bought a new home for one of the child stars, Azharuddin Ismail. He said that another should soon be found for girl star Rubina Ali.

'Too small'

Rubina, 9, and Azharuddin, 10, both lost their homes this month when the Mumbai (Bombay) authorities demolished parts of their slum.

The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Ashok Chavan, said he had approved the transfer of two government apartments to the children on Friday to "enable them to live a life of dignity".

But correspondents say their former neighbours in the slums will not be so lucky.

"Slumdog Millionaire has won Oscar recognition," Mr Chavan told the Associated Press.

"We thought this would be a proper thing to honour these children acting in the film. It would be a good gesture on the part of the government."

However the mother of Azharuddin, Shamin Ismail, told the BBC that the apartment being offered by the government was in an unsuitable location away from the rest of her family - in the far western suburb of Malad.

"Our family may grow and it would be better if we had a bigger house," she said. "My son worked very hard during the making of the film so it's only fair if he gets bigger accommodation."

'Glamorous world'

Mr Boyle, who has been criticised for not helping the child actors enough, on Thursday blamed the press for raising their expectations

"Inevitably, the tension and pressure is media generated," he said.

He said he hoped a new home would also be found for Rubina Ali, who played Latika, before the monsoon rains in June.

"They were given access to a world, an extraordinary and glamorous world, and they understandably want their lives to be completely transformed," he said.

Earlier this month, the authorities tore the children's slum homes down.

Since then Rubina has been staying with relatives and Azharuddin has been living in a makeshift shanty with his parents.

sanjay dutta

Thanks to the recession and the stand-off between producers and multiplex, theatres the biggest of films under-production are lying unsold.Director Rahul Dholakia's Kashmir saga Lamhaa is one such multi-crore film that is waiting for buyers. In spite of heavyweights like Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha Basu and Kunal Kapoor in the cast Lamhaa has found no takers yet.

Producer Bunty Walia has found a unique way of selling his film. He has put together a 6-minute trailer of Lamhaa which he will now send to 30 distributors across the country.

Walia hopes the trailer would convince distributors to invest in Lamhaa. Says the harassed producer. "I know this is a very unorthodox way of selling a film. But do we have a choice? Gone are the days when we producers wouldn't show a frame of our films to distributors until it was complete. "

In fact Bunty flew to Goa where Dutt is shooting, with his 6-minute trailer-showreel and got the actor's approval. Says Bunty, "Sanju loved it. Nothing is being done without his approval. Sanju is the backbone of Lamhaa. He grew a beard especially for the film. Then kept it right until the end. He shaved off the beard on the day he left for Lucknow to campaign for the Samajwadi Party."

Now, apparently, Dutt is taking a keen interest in the completion, sale and marketing of his films. Several of his films including Zee's Chatur Singh Two Star and Lamhaa are yet to find buyers.

But Walia says it's only a matter of time. "The break that he took send out wrong signals in the market. Now that he's back full-swing, the market knows Sanju is here for good. See, content is king. And if you've a film with a high content then you've nothing to worry about.

Anjum Rajabali talks about Rajneeti

rajneetistill.jpg

Does history repeat itself? Even centuries later, do people carry within them the DNA of age-old fratricidal wars, like some devilishly complex proteins? As Kurukshetra, Haryana was where thousands of years ago the bloody Mahabharat wars were fought over land and till today, they say, that if you dig hard and long, your chances are that you will find the red soil which was synonymous to the worlds bloodiest battle ever fought on land. It seems to be once again becoming the source of many abominable tales of corruption, of violent revenge killings, murky land deals and dirty politics. So, the conclusion is that the present begins from the past and present depicts the future. So it is essential for everyone to know the history of our past because every present emerges from the past and despite modifications, the base of all the things remains same. Come to think of it, Mahabharata is a glorious welter of incident and digression, evoking not just a central story of ruinous war but an array of myths and human archetypes and an animal world a quiver with magic drawn to its transcending themes: man's joyous awakening to nature and love and duty, the menacing lures of vanity and ambition and war with political degradation. At least hindsight is a must for those who have no foresight. For the sightless, Dhritharashtra of the epic Mahabharata and the progenies in terms of vision less political parties of today, someone like Sanjaya has to interpret characters, situations and their meanings, for all times to come. In our grand finale of the first season of the 'Writers Notepad', Bollywood Hungama's London correspondent and UK's Harrow Observer columnist present to you a writer par excellence, Anjum Rajabali and his take on his most ambitious project this year - Prakash Jha's Rajneeti which is highly influenced from the epic Mahabharata. Come; join us in this final battle of the pen versus the sword.

Rajneeti - An ambitious film
A couple of reasons for that, actually. One is that while I've dealt with political subjects in a couple of earlier screenplays, this is the first time that I'm tackling a plot that deals squarely with the electoral politics of the Hindi heartland. When Prakash (Jha) invited me to write Rajneeti with him in 2004, my first reaction was to decline politely, as I didn't have any useful understanding or even familiarity with that political culture. I mean barring what one gleans from the news media. However, Prakash knows that territory like the back of his hand - having observed it for decades and now being an active participant in elections there. He assured me that he'd educate me about the ground reality and since he was to co-write it too, he was responsible for ensuring that the script and the film would have a credible political flavour. That made me comfortable taking it on. Two, apart from the backdrop, the scale of the human drama too is immense. Not just does it deal with the shenanigans, skulduggery and manipulation that go on during the run-up to an election, but the dramatic canvas includes sub-plots of relationships that get rocked and buffeted by electoral imperatives, often with tragic personal consequences. The challenge therefore was to weave in the stories of these interesting characters into the political manoeuvres and keep it credible.Politics - Old wine packed in a new bottle
This question expects me to be defensive! Anyway... Not only is the story contemporary, but even its treatment - the characterization, the relationships, the politics - all these reflect today's values and experience. Moreover, I haven't come across a plot like this in earlier films that dealt with political subjects. Both of us have tried to make sure that the script has a fresh flavour and has a resonance of today's ground reality. So no, I wouldn't agree that it is old wine in a new bottle.

Politically correct or incorrect
That cannot be a consideration while writing a film like this. You see, the aim is discover a story of interesting people and their relationships amidst all this political jostling and tell that in an impactful way. If you aren't judgemental in telling a story, then being politically correct or incorrect is hardly an issue. All you have to do is to create fictional characters in this milieu and then merely observe how they respond to their situation, and capture that in as engaging a way as you can.

Research
We had a single source of information and research: Prakash Jha. Not only did he draw upon his observations and insights, but so did I.

The challenges faced
Well, apart from what I mentioned in answer to your first question, let me mention two constructive challenges. Challenges which needed effort but offered big creative rewards. Firstly, both Prakash and I are fascinated with the Mahabharata. It was his suggestion that we look at some core aspects of the Mahabharata story and some key characters and see if they were relevant to our story, and if so, we adapt those. This may sound simple but it takes some doing, I assure you, since the milieu of our story is contemporary. Reinterpreting the characters and their dilemmas and making them relevant to today's situation was an interestingly difficult task. Secondly, working with a director who is also your co-writer presents some rather unique challenges. You see, even though I wrote the first draft of the screenplay and Prakash was to rewrite it, as I was constructing it, it was imperative to keep in mind Prakash's requirements as a director. Which meant, synchronizing your sensibilities and story-telling style not only with Prakash as a writing partner but also with the same person as director. Never easy. If the partnership is not democratic, it can become a rather serious problem for both. Fortunately, Prakash and I have known each other since 2002 when he asked me to be script consultant on Gangaajal. That arrangement worked out quite well, and so I was consultant on Apaharan too. We became friends and while working together developed a healthy respect for each other. Given this, the co-writing arrangement turned out to be a rather satisfying collaboration, I must say.Mahabharata in Rajneeti - its concept and its significanceThe Mahabharata lends itself very appropriately to a premise like ours. After all, Mahabharata was about politics and the struggle for the right to rule. To power. And that is also what, in a way, electoral politics is all about.

Aishwarya to perform at IIFA

aishwaryarai37.jpg

Aishwarya Rai is all set to dazzle audiences with her dance moves at the 10th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards night in Macau, China, next month - her second such appearance at the glamorous event. She had enthralled audiences by dancing to hit song "Kajra re" at Amsterdam in 2005. She will perform at The Venetian-Macau Resort on the night of June 13, an IIFA press statement said.Aishwarya's father-in-law, megastar Amitabh Bachchan, is the brand ambassador of IIFA.Also performing at the event will be Sonam Kapoor, who will make her on-stage debut, and Kareena Kapoor, who will show off her belly dancing skills.

Bollywood actors Boman Irani and Riteish Deshmukh, who had the audience in splits with their humour at the awards last year in Bangkok, will play hosts to the glitzy cine event again in Macau. Joining the two would be beauty queen-turned-actress Lara Dutta. The three-day IIFA Weekend will be held June 11-13 and is expected to draw over 500 luminaries from the Indian film industry. On why Macau was chosen as the destination for celebrating a decade of IIFA, the orhanisers said they hoped it would "end the deadlock between India and China over the exchange of cinema"."We feel it's (Macau) the Las Vegas of the East. In this 10th year of IIFA's existence we wanted either the US or China to be our venue," said Sabbas Joseph, one of the directors of Wizcraft, the organisers of the event.

"We chose China because we feel it could be a gateway for Indian cinema to the West. We also hope to end the deadlock between India and China over the exchange of cinema. We haven't come away from one venue without opening up doors for the India film industry. We are confident this would be the case in China," he added.

Jimmy Shergill despite Punjabi hits

jimmyshergill.jpg

Jimmy Shergill, who impressed critics with his performance in "A Wednesday", has delivered two back-to-back Punjabi blockbusters. But the actor says Bollywood is where his heart is and he has films with Karan Johar and Shoojit Sircar lined up.His Punjabi hits were "Tera Mera Ki Rishta" and "Munde UK De", but the actor says he will stick to one Punjabi flick a year from now on."This year it was an exception since it was an old commitment to Manmohan Singh, director of 'Munde UK De'. This is the reason why both 'Tera Mera Ki Rishta' and 'Munde UK De' came almost simultaneously," Jimmy told IANS.

"It would primarily be Hindi films for me while Punjabi films would have to be really exclusive. I don't wish to jump the gun and move away from Mumbai," said the actor whose Punjabi films have been doing great business in India and overseas.

Jimmy is having the best time of his career after spending over a decade in Bollywood. The actor, who debuted with Gulzar's "Maachis" in 1996, came to the spotlight for his performance in Sircar's 2005 film "Yahaan". And now he is looking forward to Karan Johar's "My Name Is Khan", which stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in lead roles.

"My upcoming Hindi films do look quite good. Either Karan Johar's 'My Name Is Khan' or Shoojit Sirkar's 'Johnny Mastana' would be my next release. Later this year I also begin shooting for Abhinay Deo's 'Crooked'. With so much happening, I have to find empty space in my diary to accommodate any more projects," Jimmy said. But he is happy that both his Punjabi films, which continue to have a great run in theatres, are paying good dividends.

"To think of it, perhaps 'Tera Mera Ki Rishta' could have grossed even more if not for the producers v/s multiplexes stand-off. Since the film was backed by EROS, the production house that was supporting the strike, it couldn't release in multiplexes. 'Munda UK De' has been luckier though since it has been made by an independent producer who went ahead and released the film in multiplexes," he said.Though it would mainly be Hindi films ahead for Jimmy, he has already consented to the next Punjabi film by director Navaniat Singh, who made a smashing debut with 'Tera Mera Ki Rishta'.

"The man comes with right cinematic sensibilities. He has worked with the likes of Aditya Chopra and Manomohan Singh and knows the craft of cinema. His next is again a family entertainer and I'm sure he would come up with a great script again. We should begin shooting early next year," Jimmy said.Other than "Tera Mera Ki Rishta" and "Munde UK De", Jimmy has earlier worked in Punjabi films like "Yaaran Naal Baharan" and "Mannat"
