One more twist
With Bollywood cutting off its supply, multiplexes have been keeping costs down by shutting some screens. Now, the situation is set to worsen with a letter going out to multiplexes that producers will not let them run even the films released already."Be it Aamir Khan Productions, Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies, UTV or Mahesh Bhatt, all have sent correspondence demanding the return of their prints," says a source from a top multiplex chain, not wishing to be named. As of now, films like Dev D, Delhi 6, Billoo and Ghajini are keeping the viewers trickling into heatres.
This new step means that with summer holidays coming up, all that the multiplexes will have to show are Hollywood films. Accordingly, the distributors of English films plan to ramp up their publicity blitz.Starting this Friday, the big Hollywood films that will hit the screens in waves are Monster vs Angels, Nights in Rodanthe, Gran Torino, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Angels and Demons, Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen and the biggest deal of them all, Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince. Fox Star Studios India will be releasing Wolverine on a grand scale.
"The film is being dubbed in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. We'll release 300 prints nationwide," confirms a studio spokesperson.Keeping some of the screens closed was essential as the multiplexes are bleeding money. Our source says, "The industry is losing Rs 5-6 crore every week." Big Cinemas and Fun Cinemas have shut down two screens at each of their properties in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. PVR is running only one screen in Chandigarh, and in Delhi, it is running 36 screens out of the total 80.Saif's new role Apparently, Saif Ali Khan has been forced to take on a new role - as an active mediator in the Bollywood versus multiplex war. The actor is worried about the release of Love Aaj Kal, the first film from his production house Illuminati Films.Directed by Imtiaz Ali, it was to release on June 26. Kambakkht Ishq, the blockbuster starring his girlfriend Kareena Kapoor, is also going to miss the summer bonanza if the stalemate continues."So these days, he is participating in all the meetings organised by the film fraternity," says a source close to him. "He is also in talks with multiplexes to find a middle ground.
